Excavators Heavy Equipment
 :  :
Safety at a excavators heavy equipment site is of prime importance. As such, there are a number of ways to prevent injury for those working with, or around, excavators heavy equipment. If your work site is in the US then OSHA regulations for minimum clearance of overhead power lines need to be followed according to [29 CFR* 1926.550(a)(15)]. Also, before proceeding with work, contact the local utility entities to find out where the both overhead and underground utility lines are. Additionally, do not operate hydraulic excavators on grades steeper than what is recommended by the manufacturer, and make sure that the machinery is positioned at a safe distance from trenches and excavations. These are a couple of basic rules and now we will go into further detail on keeping equipment operators and other site workers safe.
Let’s start with Excavators Heavy Equipment Operators: - Train the assigned equipment operators in the proper way to use the machines. Check manufacturers’ recommendations for specific details.
- Continually evaluate and address changing conditions at the worksite.
- Check manufacturers’ safety features to make sure they are working properly and label all machine controls.
- Follow manufacturers’ specifications for installing and maintaining equipment. Make sure that all attachments are securely latched before starting work.
Frequently, visually inspect quick- quick-disconnect systems, particularly after changing attachments. Check manufacturer’s information for using positive locks on quick-disconnect equipment. Train operators to conduct visual and operational checks on all machine systems and operating controls before working the machine. Most importantly, make sure that load capacities are not exceeded when lifting materials. And instruct operators that the boom must be lowered so that the bucket is on the ground and the machine is turned off when stepping off.
Other Site Workers - Every worker around the site must be trained to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions and must know the safe work practices of the various environments. - All workers need to be aware of the excavators swing areas and blind spots. To insure this it is a good safety practice to mark these swing and blind spot areas with rope, tape, or other types of barriers. Of course, foot workers need to be informed that they are to stay outside the marked areas.
Prior to the start of a work shift, communication signals between foot workers and machine operators need to be confirmed. For instance, a worker on foot that needs to approach the machine should have a clear predetermined signal to the machine operator to shut down. Inversely the operator should have a clear signal that the machine has been shut down and it is now safe to approach. Towards this end, spotters or signal persons should be included as an integral part of maintaining the communication flow. Lastly, never allow workers to ride in or work from loader buckets, and make sure that all site workers are using and maintaining their personal protection equipment. Keep in mind that if safety is not maintained on a excavators heavy equipment construction site, then the job will not be completed in a timely efficient manner.
